Counter argument

Skeptics who oppose paying an unconditional basic income justify their stance by worrying that the money will be used mostly for drugs and alcohol rather than food and basic needs.

However, a study conducted in 2022 revealed a different picture.

Results of the experiment

In 2022, 103 homeless participants distributed their monthly salaries as follows:

  • 36.6% in food,
  • 19.5% for housing,
  • 12.7% for shipping costs,
  • 11.5% in clothes,
  • 6.2% for healthcare.

Additionally, the research revealed that there were individuals who received $750. They were more likely to return from the street. The proportion of people who reported spending time without shelter dropped significantly from 30% at baseline to less than 12% 6 months after the start of the study.

Unconditional basic income research

It is worth noting that research examining the impact of unconditional basic income payment on various social groups has increased significantly recently. Similar initiatives in Denver and Stockton have yielded positive results, including increased employment, reduced debt, and improved physical and mental health of beneficiaries.

Proponents of this idea believe that it could be a potential solution to poverty and homelessness, as well as a tool against potential job losses resulting from the development of artificial intelligence technologies. Scientists and proponents of the concept argue that the implementation of an unconditional basic income could provide protection for people affected by job loss and contribute to the general well-being of society.

As debates about the future of work and the potential impact of artificial intelligence continue, the findings of these studies encourage consideration of basic income as a viable strategy to overcome challenges and build a more productive and inclusive society.
