Detail

A metal pole containing a “camera” was placed near the city of Tucson in Arizona. This is an imaginative project, the likes of which will emerge in China, the Austrian Alps, US nature reserves and other places, the writer Jonathan Keats hopes.

Keats admits that his project has no artistic, commercial, scientific or any other meaning. Moreover, since no one will monitor the installation for 1000 years, there is a 100% chance that it will not be completed. Even without natural disasters, human activities will definitely destroy the pillar and camera. The idea itself is important here and it is possible to take it and implement it in one way or another.

The camera on the pole is not digital, but a camera obscura. Mounted on the pole is a copper cylinder with a small pin-sized hole in a weatherproof 24K gold plate. The light passing through it is reversed and falls on the multilayer photosensitive coating, creating an image.

The idea is Important objects such as mountains will always remain in the frame and their images will be rendered deeply into the active layer.. And for several centuries, ephemeral events such as the creation and destruction of human settlements will remain in the form of blurry outlines. What will emerge is something like abstract art that is involved over a long period of time.

Jonathon Keats says he wants the Millennium Camera to encourage deeper thinking about humanity’s past, present and future, and what our society might be like as we enter the 31st century.

Most people have a pretty bleak view of what lies ahead. It’s easy to imagine that 1,000 years from now people will see a much worse version of Tucson than the one we see today.
– says Keats.

According to the plan, the cylinder should be opened in 3023.
