Japanese scientists have developed a new compound that captures carbon dioxide while showing 99 percent efficiency. This is the fastest system in the world – at least twice as good as its counterparts.
The new technology looks promising, but as always, the issue of scalability arises. Humanity emits about 30 billion tons of CO per year2 into the atmosphere and the largest carbon removal and storage facilities process 4,000 tons per year. Therefore, plants built according to this approach take a lot to remove the amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere needed to bring the temperature down.
Researchers are currently working to improve the system and find possible ways to use the captured carbon more.
