Galicia wants to make things easier for pet owners. And it decided to do this by targeting directly the pocketbooks of families determined to add a new four-legged member. Just a few days after taking office, Xunta’s president, Alfonso Rueda, announced that the community would activate a program to help those who adopt an abandoned dog or cat with up to 150 euros. Purpose: to cover your initial veterinary expenses.

The aid aims to encourage adoptions and alleviate the situation of Galician shelters in the process. Some warned that they were already overwhelmed.

125,000 euro support. According to Alfonso Rueda’s calculations, Xunta has allocated 125,000 euros to pay for this year’s program and hopes to cover “about a thousand requests” with this fund. There is more demand than expected: “Existing credit will be expanded if necessary.” The aim is to provide grants of up to 150 euros to those who adopt dogs and up to 125 euros to those who adopt cats.

“If the costs arising from microchipping, deworming, vaccination and sterilization carried out by the collection center are eligible,” the regional government explains: “The aid will make it possible to cover all the costs incurred by the child in case the collection center decides to transfer these costs to itself acquirer”.
