Haitian is on the FBI’s list of 10 most wanted fugitives Vitel’Homme InnocentLeader of the Kraze Barye gang, which kidnapped 17 Christian missionaries in Haiti in 2021; There are five children among them.
The United States is offering a reward of up to $2 million for information leading to Innocent’s arrest. But sometimes all it takes is a Google Earth expert to gather clues.
An interview, an expert and Google Earth
Benjamin Strick is not just an expert user of Google Earth. An expert in Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT), he directs research at an independent firm called the Center for Information Resilience.
When CNN aired an exclusive interview with Vitel’Homme Innocent, Strick needed his experience and Google satellite imagery to find the culprit’s home.
These are the images in which he begins to find home. Especially the footage of CNN reporters being taken to the Innocents’ shelter by gang members in a minibus.
Strick triangulated the location through landscape elements, bends in the road, and some buildings.
He first found the building with the factory-like roof using two references: the mountain range surrounding Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and a wall following a bend in a dirt road. The building is at coordinates 18.5447, -72.2359.
Other images showed a small wall and half-built pillars, despite the low resolution of satellite images.
Strick then noticed a pile of debris piled up next to a wall. According to Google Image History, the wreckage is also visible on Google Earth and has actually been there for years.
The CNN report then shows Innocent’s house. It was a mile away from previous locations, but thanks to features like the double gable roof, entrance, and construction site next to it, Strick had no trouble finding it within a few hours.
The house is located at coordinates 18.5278, -72.2314. We assume Vitel’Homme Innocent no longer lives there (perhaps he never did), but it’s still surprising that a few images allowed someone to use publicly available data to locate one of the FBI’s 10 most wanted fugitives.
This is what OSINT and GEOINT consist of: compilation of information obtained from public sources (in this case, a journalistic report) and geographic sources such as Google Earth satellite images. There are trainings for these disciplines on Benjamin Strick’s YouTube channel.
