The new map is called “Cities of the Future” and it shows which cities on the planet have the climate your current residence will have in 2080. It used weather data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for 40,581 locations around the world.

How does it work

In 50 years, cities in the northern hemisphere will look much more like cities in the southern hemisphere. By 2010, according to 2015 estimates, nearly 6 percent of the world’s land mass had shifted toward a warmer, drier climate than it had in 1950. The most dramatic changes have occurred in North America, Europe, and Oceania. This trend shows no signs of abating, meaning that eventually all of the north will shift to the climate that prevails in equatorial regions today.

  • The map shows that in 60 years Lviv will resemble the Italian city of Budrio, near Bologna.
  • Kiev will have a climate similar to modern Roishte in Romania.
  • Donetsk wouldn’t be that far away: its modern equivalent is the Romanian city of Rusti.
  • It will be in the same climate zone as the Bulgarian city of Lomi, which is very close to Dnipro, Roishte and Rasti.

As you can understand, all these climatic zones are slightly warmer than modern Ukraine.

It’s worth noting that this card has some options. After selecting your city, click on Settings. You’ll be able to see climate predictions based on current high greenhouse gas emissions, and how things would change if humanity were to reduce its emissions.
