Scientists from all over the world are conducting research on various diseases. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a common neurological disease, is one of them. Worldwide, more than 200 thousand people struggle with this disease that limits their mobility.

Now, a development has taken place in our country that deeply affects these patients. According to Anadolu Agency from Sakarya University (SAU) researchers, Artificial intelligence-assisted robotic arm for ALS patients developed.

It will increase the mobility of ALS patients and make their lives easier.

SAU Member of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, Assoc. dr. Muhammed Kursad UcarFive years ago, he began a project to make the daily lives of ALS patients easier. As a result of the work in the project, in which students from the department took turns, an arm supported by artificial intelligence was created.

This robotic arm, developed with support from TÜBİTAK, is a device used to measure electrical movements in the brain. electroencephalography (EEG) It works through the title. In his statement to AA, Uçar explained that this device, which aims to increase the capabilities of ALS patients, could be used by people at home in the future:

“Our goal is to produce hardware that can meet the specific needs of ALS patients, such as playing chess, drinking water, picking something up from a table, and that only works with brain signals. The prototype system that we have developed, With 97% accuracy “It functions.”

System, robot arm and Processing brain signals with artificial intelligence It consists of two basic parts: Electrical and Electronics Engineering student Ömer Göker, who was involved in the project, said: They receive brain signals and process them with artificial intelligence.and then stated that they are printed on the right and left. this also controlling the arm through thoughts offers.

Efforts are still underway to commercialize the arm. According to researchers, it may even be possible to see a version of it that covers the entire body in the future. Although the prototype was successful, the project remained still in development in the stage. We hope that the goals are indeed achieved and that this product, which can make the lives of ALS patients easier, can be widely used.
