What is known about the find

TSMC plans to build two factories in Chiai, Taiwan, to produce AI chips. The first of these was scheduled to start in 2028, but those plans will likely have to be adjusted and postponed indefinitely.

Information about the archaeological remains found first appeared on Taiwanese social networks. Since the removal of such objects is a difficult task that requires high attention, this task cannot be entrusted to builders. Therefore, National Taiwan University is urgently recruiting qualified personnel to participate in archaeological excavations.

Of course, it is not true that the remains discovered at Chiaya will necessarily cause delays in the program. However, since no one knows exactly what was found at the construction site, it is too early to talk about it. It could be something that is not very old, has little historical value, or it could be the remains of some ancient objects that scientists want to preserve before they can be moved to another location. In that case, TSMC will need to look for an alternative location for construction.

Demand for chips is increasing

Increasing global demand for AI chips, which require advanced technologies to achieve maximum performance, has forced TSMC to expand its operations.

The company is also considering building factories outside Taiwan to reduce risks from a possible Chinese invasion. They want to build the first such facility in the US state of Arizona. For this, the company has previously received $6.6 billion in support from the US government.
