According to Vice, the author of the video is Matt Heller. There was four feet of water in the living room at the time of the shooting, so he took his purple boat and moved around the property.
The canoe was my escape plan in case the situation got too difficult to get out of. I didn’t think I’d need this in the living room.
Heller later said in an interview on CNN.
According to Heller, he was staying afloat in a canoe within the confines of his home. When the electricity went out, he was able to light up part of the house with candles.
Like many people in the area, Geller told reporters he was surprised at how quickly it all happened, noting that in just an hour and a half the water rose 1.2 meters above the ground.
Heller said nothing like this had ever happened in his home before this disaster, but hurricanes are common in Florida and occur every year.
It is worth noting that Storm surge from Hurricane Helen was considered the largest storm on record for the region. In another part of the city, the East Bay, water rose more than two meters, while the previous record was 1.3 meters in 2023.
It’s hard to imagine what awaits residents of these areas when Hurricane Milton finally reaches Florida. The wind speed is said to have reached up to 290 kilometers per hour and then dropped to 241 kilometers per hour, the strongest wind in history. This is also expected to lead to widespread destruction and flooding as high winds cause significant sea level rise along much of Florida’s west coast and central portion of the northeast coast.
