When choosing which career to pursue, students’ thematic preferences take on more weight, and they tend to set aside future determinants such as the professional opportunities offered by that career or the salaries paid in that career. The ‘Youth employability in Spain 2024’ research prepared by the Knowledge and Development Foundation sheds light on the most successful careers in job placement and the working conditions that new graduates will encounter.

IT leads in employability. Data from the study shows that four years after graduation, 86.97% of Computer Science graduates contribute to Social Security, positioning social security as the career with the highest employability rate.

This is followed by the field of Health and Social Services, with careers such as Medicine and Nursing achieving a placement rate of 83.80%. In contrast, Social Sciences, Journalism and Documentation degrees record one of the lowest job placement rates at 70.43% and are only surpassed by Arts and Humanities, which have the most difficulty finding employment after completing their studies. with 63.83%.

Stands out with medical salaries. According to the report of the Information and Development Foundation, university graduates contribute an average of 29,559 euros per year. In careers such as Computer Science, 64.17% of graduates earn an annual salary above this average, while in Health and Social Services (medical) careers the percentage of graduates with a salary above €30,000 is 66.71%, making Medicine a top field is doing. paid career with an average annual contribution of 39,775 euros.

At the other pole, Services, Tourism and Hospitality degrees are the lowest paying fields; 53.75% of graduates earn less than 24,000 euros per year. However, in terms of contribution by field, Art Conservation and Restoration and Archeology are the lowest paid degrees, with an average annual contribution base of €20,772 and €21,079 respectively.

The important thing is stability. The readings differ slightly in terms of the stability of the types of contracts signed by graduates of each degree. For example, although the IT field is the second best paying field after Medicine, the difference in terms of timeliness is huge.

96.96% of the contracts signed by Computer Engineering graduates are full-time and 92% are indefinite. However, Medicine is one of the most temporary careers; surprisingly 98% of temporary contracts among new graduates and 99.22% of these are full time.

Privatization of education comes at a cost. Another issue that stands out in the research is the difference in job placement and wages between public and private university graduates. The data shows that those studying at private institutions have higher membership rates as self-employed (7.45%) and a higher annual contribution base of around 3,400 euros compared to those at public universities (6.72%).
