With more than 200 deaths and today incalculable losses in the Valencian Community alone, DANA has become a priority issue. Because of the tragic death toll, but also because of the open debate about the management of the crisis and the role of the administrations on 29 October. The problem is compounded now that part of the peninsula has been hit by the new DANA, which has activated red alert in some areas.

How did the Generalitat react to the worst DANA of the century in Valencia? So how are they currently behaving in other regions such as Catalonia or Andalusia?

One tragedy, two focuses. Since October 29, when part of the Valencian Community faced a historic DANA disaster, the focus of the media, public opinion and political debate has turned to two main points. The first is the balance of victims, losses and destruction. Second, how governments responded to the heavy rain event, for which Aemet set the “red level”, the maximum possible level, hours in advance.

The discussion had been on the table for two weeks. Despite the data published by Aemet and the heavy downpour, the Es-Alert system, which allows the public to be informed via mobile phones, was not used until after eight o’clock in the evening, in areas already seriously affected by DANA.

Prison yes or no? Compromís accuses Carlos Mazón of “reckless murder” and blames the Minister of the Interior for failing to act in the face of the “incompetence” of the Generalitat. Since yesterday, another key point has been added to the debate: Should Cecopi have asked people in the most affected areas to “stay closed” in their homes or workplaces and not go out? The reason: We now know that this “imprisonment” idea was on the table on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 29, hours before the Es-Alert system went into effect.

To be more precise in the Western Costa del Sol, Málaga and La Axarquía, where the warning continues until midnight; and Tarragona’s South Coast, which Aemet considers “extreme risk” until 10 p.m.

There are also other regions of Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community with an orange notification by DANA, the second at its three scales managed by Aemet; and yellow, lowest in Asturias, Castilla y León, Galicia and Murcia.

So how did they respond? With the memory of the tragedy two weeks ago still fresh, Andalusia activated the emergency phase of its Flood Risk Plan. It was put forward by the Board itself, which announced yesterday at 20.23 that the transition from the pre-emergency phase to the emergency phase was made.

What does this mean? Evacuation of the Guadalhorce riverside area and suspension of classes in all educational centers in the province of Málaga, as well as in the capital of Granada, the Genil basin, the Granada coast, Almuñécar, Motril and Albuñol. “The measure also affects day centers and disabled people belonging to the Andalusian Junta,” the regional government states, which does not rule out the suspension continuing tomorrow.

What measures were taken? The maxim seems to be the same as in Andalusia: to prevent, even at the expense of imposing restrictions.
