On April 1, a new overview was presented in which one could see slime move “by itself”, as well as pick up objects and even regenerate after being cut.

The video was posted on the site New scientist on her social media, which garnered everyone’s attention due to her resemblance to slime, earning thousands of comparisons to Venom symbiote.

Let’s say the April 1 date confirmed the suspicions of many people who had access to the video, leading some to think it was a joke, but it’s all true and it’s serious research.

One of the co-authors of magnetic slime, professor Li Zhangfrom the Chinese University of Hong Kong talked a little about this slime and what it will be used for, and also explained a little about what it is made of.

Magnetic slime that is not a symbiote

Magnetic slime is made from a mixture of polymers called polyvinyl alcohol, bura (which is a constant ingredient in the production of cleaning products) and neodymium.

“It’s like mixing water with starch. [de milho] at home,” Zhang said. Mixing these two substances produces an ooblek, a non-Newtonian fluid whose viscosity changes under the action of a force. “When you touch it too fast, it behaves like a solid body. When you touch it gently and slowly, it behaves like a liquid,” Zhang said.

One of the things that is also impressive is that the slime doesn’t have any robotic components. According to the scientists, it is the neodymium particles that allow the team to manipulate the goo, making it move or even allowing it to wrap itself around objects.

Since this body is made up of magnetic particles, the researchers claim that it is even possible to conduct electricity through the mucus, which also makes it an alternative for use in electrical component maintenance situations.

What good will you do in the future?

Magnetic mucus holds great promise, especially in the field of health care, as its soft body and ability to shrink to 1.5mm allow foreign bodies to be removed from the digestive tract without the need for any other more aggressive procedure.

“The end goal is to deploy it as a robot,” Zhang said, adding that the silt does not have autonomy at the moment. “We still consider it fundamental research – trying to understand the properties of its material.”

Also in the video, we could see some of the tests done by scientists where they mimic the action of mucus inside the digestive tract and the capture of a small battery, but the scientists warn that they do not intend to immediately put mucus in tests in a medical environment.

The reason is that at the moment the mucus is toxic, so a safe method must first be created so that the remains of the mucus do not leak inside the human body.

At first, one of the measures taken by scientists was to cover the body of the slime with a layer of silica, which is one of the main components of sand, which should theoretically reduce the risks, but Zhang made it clear that ;

“Safety also depends a lot on how long you keep them in your body,” Zhang said.

Continuation after commercial

At the moment, magnetic slime is able to cling to and embed itself in small objects, as well as regenerate when cut, in addition to being able to conduct electricity. And according to Zhang, you can also add color pigments. You just don’t know how to make a costume yet.
