Warships, dinosaur footprints and ancient megaliths: droughts reveal new finds

Nazi fleet

As the water level drops on Europe’s second longest river, the Danube, a fleet of more than 20 wrecked Nazi warships loaded with explosives has been discovered near Prahovo in eastern Serbia. The ships remained intact for nearly 80 years and are believed to have been part of a fleet that sailed between Nazi Germany and the Black Sea Fleet in 1944.

The story of 20 Nazi ships ended when they were purposely sunk so that they would not fall into enemy hands during the retreat of the German army. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of the story for Serbia, which now has to take measures to avoid the danger posed by this garbage.

There are still tons of ammunition and explosives in the wreckage and pose a threat to modern shipping routes.

The estimated cost of the Serbian government in March 2022 for the destruction of sunken ships and the destruction of explosives is about 29m euros.

lost island

Meanwhile, in China, water levels in the Yangtze River have revealed an entire previously flooded island. Three Buddhist statues believed to be around 600 years old have been discovered on the island. They are located at the highest point of the island known as Foyleyan.

Rainfall in the Yangtze Basin has dropped nearly 45 percent since July. According to reports from around the country, 66 rivers in Chongqing Municipality have dried up in the region’s worst heat wave in the last six decades. The drought also caused water loss in the hydroelectric system, causing Sichuan authorities to cut power to thousands of factories, including Toyota, Tesla and Foxconn, in an attempt to “leave electricity for the public”.

The monument is under 5000 years old

The statues of the Nazi fleet and Ming Dynasty are recent compared to the monuments discovered in Spain in the Tagus River. A rare megalithic monument dating between 2000 and 3000 BC.

The discovery was made at a site known locally as the Guadalperal Dolmen, also known as the “Spanish Stonehenge” due to its resemblance to a much more famous site in England.

The area itself was discovered in 1926 and sank in 1963. It was only fully visible four times in almost 60 years after the flood. “This is a rare opportunity to access this artifact,” said archaeologist Enrique Cedillo of the Complutense University in Madrid.

dinosaur footprints

The oldest discovery made this week from a dried-up riverbed is a remarkably well-preserved dinosaur track discovered at the aptly named Dinosaur Valley State Park near Fort Worth, Texas. The fossils are believed to be about 113 million years old and belong to Acrocanthosaurus, a 4.5-metre-long predator that walked on two legs.

Due to extreme drought last summer, the river dried up completely in most places, allowing more trails to be explored in the park here. Under normal river conditions, these new tracks are submerged and often filled with sediment, making them buried and less visible.
– explained the representative of the park, Stephanie Salinas.

Recently, droughts have become more frequent as the world continues to warm, which is having a devastating effect on the planet. It is believed to have been one of the most debilitating droughts globally in the last 500 years. As water levels around the world reach record levels and climate catastrophes continue to increase, more such discoveries are inevitable.
