First fully private space mission arrives at space station

To date, first fully private space mission can be considered a success. Four astronauts representing the company Axiom Space Inc. arrived this Saturday (9) at International Space Station (ISS).

There, the group joins seven other crew members who are on site. In the next eight days they will be engaged in scientific research. It took the astronauts 21 hours to reach the site after taking off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The mission is considered a milestone for commercial spaceflight

Spanish astronaut Michael López-Alegria, 63, retired from NASA, is the mission leader that will conduct scientific and biomedical experiments in situ. He is joined by Larry Connor, 70, a real estate and technology entrepreneur; Eitan Stibbe, 64-year-old Israeli investor; and Mark Paty, a 52-year-old Canadian businessman.

There are currently seven crew members on the International Space Station: three American astronauts, one German from the European Space Agency, and three Russian cosmonauts.

The list of studies planned for the coming days includes topics related to brain health, heart stem cells, cancer and aging. More details about each of the experiments are not disclosed.

OUR Mission AX-1 and the first commercial group of astronauts arrived at the ISS for the purpose of scientific research. This is SpaceX’s sixth manned space flight in the past two years, signaling the company’s increased activity in this segment.

In the future, the company plans to build its own space station, offering services other than space tourism, according to Axiom executives.
