Glaciers all over the world, including on the African continent, could disappear within a few decades. Scientists have compiled a list of places where the ice will melt, including Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest point.
Why are glaciers melting?
Although they fight against global warming, the ice on objects will melt. The list of UNESCO objects includes 50 sites with 18,600 glaciers. They may all be gone.
This is almost 10% of the Earth’s glaciers found in tourist hotspots or areas sacred to local residents. They lose 58 billion tons of ice each year, equivalent to the combined annual volume of water from France and Spain.
While the additional melting somewhat offsets other effects of climate change (like keeping rivers from drying out during heat waves), it’s quickly reaching a critical threshold.
Where the glaciers will disappear
- Hyrkan forests (Iran);
- Durmitor National Park (Montenegro);
- Virunga National Park (Democratic Republic of the Congo);
- Huanglong scenic and historic district (China);
- Yellowstone National Park (USA);
- Mount Kenya National Park/Natural Forest (Kenya);
- Pyrenees Mont-Perdue (France, Spain);
- Rwenzori Mountains National Park (Uganda);
- Putorana Plateau (Russia);
- Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardon (Switzerland);
- Nahanni National Park (Canada);
- Lorenza National Park (Indonesia);
- the natural system of the Wrangel Island Reserve (Russia);
- Kilimanjaro National Park (Tanzania);
- Yosemite National Park (USA);
- Dolomites (Italy);
- Pristine forests of Komi (Russia).
How to avoid the problem
Other glaciers can still be saved if greenhouse gas emissions are drastically reduced and global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the UNESCO report said.
At the same time, the number of places in the world that is cold enough for glaciers to actually grow is getting smaller and smaller.
How will winter be in Ukraine: forecasts of weather forecasters
- In the second half of November, winter weather will prevail in some parts of Ukraine. Snow will fall in all parts of Ukraine, only in some places it will be very little. It will also cover the streets in other areas with a thick layer of white.
- Heavy snowfall is not expected in the last month of autumn. However, wet snow will continue to fall in some places. It will snow in Kiev on November 13. Forecasters warned that snow will fall a lot, but it will not stay on the earth’s surface.
- Global warming affects many processes taking place in the world. Experts often say it may disappear in winter due to the threat of global warming. Mykola Kulbida, director of the Ukrhydrometeorological Center, said whether such a scenario is possible in Ukraine.
