According to Martinez, Taposiris Magna had a population of between 15,000 and 20,000 at the time the tunnel was built. The tunnel was built under a temple honoring Osiris, the ancient Egyptian god of the underworld, and the Egyptian goddess Isis, who was Osiris’ wife.
