‘Personalised pharmaceutical manufacturing’ starts with 3D printers: how will it differ from the drugs we know?

The vast majority of drugs sold in pharmacies today are mass production Product. In fact, this is necessary because drugs must be produced in large quantities in order to be sold cheaply, otherwise their prices will rise significantly.

What about medicines available in the market? what if you need a different dosage? Since the drug you want to buy comes in a single dose from mass production, you have to pay a lot more money for the drug you want to acquire or you may not even be able to find it. This is where personalized medicine comes into play.

Thanks to the work of this Finland-based company, medicines are custom made with 3D printers:

An initiative called CurifyLabs, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, has begun manufacturing personalized medicines using 3D printers. The company’s goal is to bring this technology primarily to hospitals and veterinary clinics.

The company, which was founded last year and started the project with a capital of 3.5 million euros; thus aiming to meet a patient’s exact needs:

Under normal circumstances, a drug that comes off the mass production line is not personal and at the moment it is not possible to talk about a completely appropriate treatment. For example, it is impossible to remove an allergenic substance from a mass-produced drug, but personalized drug treatments can.

The first prototype work at CurifyLabs also starts with the curiosity of founder Niklas Sandler Topelius:

In fact, Topelius, a scientist who has published scientific papers in more than 100 approved journals, puts drug materials in suitable shapes and forms into the “ink” section of an ordinary three-dimensional printer for the first prototype, and the initial results are remarkable. The company, which then received an investment of 3.5 million euros for this concept, is now developing special printer technologies for this company.

Although the company has a market value of 3.5 million euros, the total volume of the global healthcare industry is 1.42 trillion dollars, so the company is still at the beginning:
