Japan tries to generate electricity from snow: how does it work?

The technology was developed by Tokyo University of Electronic Communications. He will conduct these tests with Forte, a local start-up in the field of information technology.

what is known

  • Snow collected on the streets during the experiment will act as a source of cold air. It will be loaded into the pool where the heat transfer tubes will be placed.
  • The outside air is also heated by the sun.
  • Due to the temperature difference of the refrigerant between the part of the installation to be cooled by the snow and the part to be heated by the sun, a convection movement will occur in the liquid.
  • The fluid will drive the micro turbine.
  • The higher the temperature difference, the greater the resulting power.

System tests will be carried out until March. According to scientists, the effectiveness of this method of generating electricity may be higher than when solar panels are used. According to the researchers, using snow for electricity generation is much more environmentally friendly. While the proposed snow solution contains almost no waste, solar panels can sometimes be destroyed.

Snow energy is expected to be produced at low costs. At the same time, the price of such energy would be extremely low.

There are also plans to use the heat of the hot springs to create even greater temperature differences. In the northeastern region of Japan, there are many hot spring resorts in areas that receive heavy snow.
