Do you know that NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Is there a program that funds the best ideas in astronomy and astronautics for possible use in future missions?
Program Innovative advanced concepts (NIAC) from NASA – or Innovative Advanced Concepts in Portuguese – funds research that is at an early stage to evaluate their potential, whether they are improved or completely new aerospace concepts. It was founded in 2011 as the successor to the Institute for Advanced Concepts and announced multi-million dollar grants for engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs who can introduce exciting and cutting-edge technologies. In March of this year, NASA selected and announced the most recent proposed projects with awards that collectively reach US$5.1M (approximately 24 million reais in current direct conversion).
But so far, no spacecraft, only nanoscale – and in the laboratory
Ideas go beyond already known rovers to explore our neighboring planet Mars, which is one of the bodies we have best studied and the object of constant discoveries. Project concepts vary, and it offers innovation in several areas such as space travel, improved suits for live in spacediscovery of more resistant materials and new concepts in computing, robotics and instrumentation.
There are, for example, individual projects that propose small climbing robots to enter caves under the surface of Mars, or even 3D printed microrobots capable of swimming to explore the oceans of moons such as Saturn’s Titan. Another project represents a new way of using nuclear energy for spacecraft, and so on.
