I visited Project Borealis, which is the basis of the world’s next fastest supercomputer, codenamed Aurora. It will have 2 exaflops of computing power and its power consumption should be equivalent to that of 40,000 US homes!
But what does a supercomputer, which seems so far from our reality, have to do with our daily lives? Typically, a supercomputer is used in military and scientific research, as well as in medicine or other areas that require large computing resources, such as chemistry, biology, quantum physics, mechanics, and meteorology. And the development of technology has led us to create such machines with greater data processing and memory capabilities.
In the video, I talk a little more about these machines, which have state-of-the-art equipment and high performance that would take a normal machine thousands of years to complete. For example, Aurora will be used for nuclear fusion research, low carbon technology, subatomic particles, cancer and cosmology. He will also be developing new materials that will be useful for more efficient batteries and solar cells, and his research should be made available to the wider scientific community.
