Let’s recall briefly: the essence of such projects is the spraying of special substances into the atmosphere that can block part of the sunlight in certain parts of the planet, thereby preventing its further heating. Bill Gates, for example, is exploring the possibility of spraying chalk, with some scientists turning their attention to sulfur dioxide, while others, including the White House itself, are thinking about sulfur dioxide. The problem is that this could trigger uncontrolled processes that sustain themselves, leading to another ice age. Some scientists say that the topic of solar geoengineering has not yet been studied enough for such experiments.
What does Make Sunsets do?
- Luke Iseman, founder of Make Sunsets, in December last year first batch launched sulfur dioxide balls into the sky over Mexico.
- The job of helium-filled balloons is to reach the stratosphere, exfoliate and disperse a large number of dioxide particles that will reflect the sun’s rays.
- At the end of January, Iseman will launch the next batch of projectiles and repeat this for at least 20 years until we cool the planet.
This technology belongs to the category of “solar geoengineering”, but in its current form it is still a concept – no one has conducted serious experiments with shadowing the Earth and is not sure what the consequences may be, because even modern computer simulations cannot predict the consequences of such an intervention.
At the same time, the 1989 Montreal Protocol on the regulation of chemicals in the atmosphere has a whole section describing this principle of atmospheric influence. Then the task of protecting the ozone layer was solved, but now humanity is looking for ways to save the Earth from overheating.
Iseman’s actions have drawn a host of criticism from scientists, environmentalists and politicians, but they can’t stop him.
- First, there is no such law or treaty that prohibits a private person from geoengineering.
- Second, Iseman was cautiously but formally supported by the US National Academy of Sciences, which called for the idea to be promoted without waiting for new political agreements and international consensus.
The position of supporters of geoengineering is: The world is on the verge of an ecological disaster, so it is necessary to save it by any means and as soon as possible.. Its opponents state that Make Sunsets is in no hurry to take responsibility for the unintended consequences. In addition, Iseman tries to make decisions on behalf of all humanity at the same time, ignoring geopolitical interests and the opinions of billions of people.
