Scientists have succeeded in creating conditions where light cannot actually escape beyond the film. Therefore, it behaves like a flowing liquid in the form of a river with many tributaries.
Experiment details
- The key is to choose a soap solution that will be stable and completely stable.
- It focuses a thin beam of light through the fiber, which cannot pass instantly due to the heterogeneous nature of the soap film.
- In this case, the irregularities of the soap layer are in the optimal indicator range – light is not scattered and is not reflected from them.
- The light cannot leave the plane of the film and penetrates the opposite edge relatively slowly.

For better visualization, the scientists added a dye to the soap solution. They saw the light propagate through the film like water on land, passing over the mounds and then splitting into rivers that could rejoin.
Such areas accumulate more light and appear brighter, but this is not a strict rule – it all depends on the mutual synchronization of different light waves in individual streams. Therefore, the picture is different each time.
