The manufacturer’s fruit scanner allows the user to determine if the fruit is in good condition and avoid situations where the product is beautiful on the outside, but completely spoiled on the inside.

With OneThird Scanner hopes to reduce perishable food waste by around 25%, in addition to making life easier for the user when it comes to food. “The astronomical amount of food that is wasted every year is heartbreaking, especially with so much waste happening in rich countries. We are working hard to create technologies that can help solve this global problem that directly affects food shortages,” commented Marco Snickers, CEO. and founder of OneThird.

According to Snickers, the company’s scanner is capable of determining the expiration date of scanned products, rather than simply determining the amount of sugar or acidity, as is the case with today’s laboratory scanners. “We are very proud to have created the first product capable of accurately and objectively assessing the shelf life of fresh produce.”

Users and manufacturers can benefit from the scanner

The fruit scanner uses a near infrared (NIR) sensor. you can predict how long the product will stay fresh, through algorithms. Forecasts are made in real time, which makes it easier to analyze the product. It can be seen from the images that the scanner was tested on avocados and strawberries, but the company did not provide data on whether the device is capable of determining the suitability of all types of fruit.

In addition, OneThird claims to be working on two versions of the fruit scanner, one of which is aimed at the end user, thinking about streamlining and facilitating supermarket trips. The second version of the device is designed for supply chain manufacturers. In this way, farmers and ranchers can more easily determine the quality of the crop and suggest a suitable place for food. At the moment, OneThird has not provided information on when the product will be available on the market and what the price of each model will be.
