Every year, thousands of space objects fly to our planet. Most are small meteorites that have completely burned up in Earth’s atmosphere. But one day, a huge asteroid may appear in their place, and its fall will be catastrophic. China has decided to take on the responsibility of protecting the planet from such threats – the China National Space Administration (CNSA) has already launched a project to combat asteroids.
Battle asteroids will be in two phases. First and foremost, it is close observations that will determine exactly which cosmic objects are potentially a threat to Earth and which are not. Once a threat is detected, the second phase will begin – neutralization, where the dangerous asteroid will collide with another object to remove it from orbit.
CNSA Vice President Wu Yanhua said that close surveillance technology tests will begin at the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan, 2021-2025, or a little later – in 2025-2026. With the new system, China will make a significant contribution to the development of the space industry and the protection of all humanity. And the Chinese can only wish good luck in this matter.
