In the next few years, incredible progress in space exploration awaits us. Many countries, agencies and especially the private sector have invested heavily to get back to the moon, explore space and who knows how to set foot on Mars.

One such private company developing “space technologies” is Rolls Roycewho, in addition to machines, also wants to go into space.

Rolls-Royce and its micronuclear reactor

Rolls-Royce has signed a groundbreaking agreement with UK space agency to explore future nuclear power options for space exploration. This first contract between the two organizations provides an opportunity to define and formulate the nuclear power solutions needed in space for decades to come. Rolls-Royce is the only company in the world with a focus on mechanical, electrical and nuclear solutions.

Moving towards the goal of creating nuclear energy, the company presented its microreactor last Friday (27):

The Rolls-Royce microreactor uses an inherently safe and extremely durable form of fuel. Each uranium particle is encased in multiple protective layers that act as a containment system, allowing it to withstand extreme conditions.

Dave Gordon, Senior Vice President Rolls-Royce Defense from UK said:We are delighted to be working with the UK Space Agency on this groundbreaking project to define the future of nuclear power technologies for space. We believe the UK has a real niche in this area and this initiative can build on the UK’s strong core network and supply chain. We look forward to developing this and other exciting space projects in the future as we continue to develop the power to protect our planet, protect our world, and explore our universe.

The Rolls-Royce Micro Reactor will be part of the company’s portfolio of potential products for human presence on the moon. Head of Innovation Jake Thompson explains how the following steps will be taken:

Continuation after commercial

Now here at Rollys-Royce, more than 60 engineers and scientists are working on these incredible technologies for space exploration. We are currently working on the initial conceptual design and testing phase of both our two-stage orbital system and our nuclear systems. We have already built a small demonstration prototype of our space reactor, and by 2029 we will have a reactor ready to be sent to the Moon.

This is a big step that could help astronauts populate the Moon, or even other planets like Mars, in the future. Of course, other countries are also investing in similar technologies, but the UK has already taken big steps in this partnership with Rolls-Royce for nuclear power for use in space.

Nuclear power opens up new possibilities for space exploration, and this groundbreaking research, done in partnership with Rolls-Royce, could help our next generation of astronauts get into space faster and longer, greatly expanding our understanding of the universe.“. said Amanda Solloway, UK science minister.
