researchers from University of Californiain Davis published an article about their latest discovery: cyborg cells. And it’s as revolutionary as it sounds.

These cells will be able to help fight disease due to their controlled nature, making them ideal soldiers for many of the battles that medicine is waging.

Programmable cyborg cells that can be used to treat diseases

A study published in cutting edge science demonstrates that it is possible to create semi-living cyborg cells with capabilities similar to living cells, but incapable of reproduction and growth. What makes them cyborg cells is their inability to reproduce, which is why they are so important to science.

They are not reproducible and therefore controllable, they become useful because they are immutable and out of control. This type of artificial cell could be useful for cleaning organisms and even treating diseases like cancer if channeled in the right way.

Engineered artificial cells usually work in one of two ways: remodeling existing cells, or creating artificial cells with limited capabilities. Programmable cyborg cells have set a new precedent.

The cyborg cells were programmed using bacterial cells as a base, with the addition of artificial polymer elements that were exposed to ultraviolet light to form a hydrogel matrix. Based on this, cyborg cells withstand more stress than normal cells.

While this is a great discovery that could help fight some diseases and other developments that we don’t see on the horizon yet, the researchers acknowledged that they are still not sure what prevents cells from reproducing, so they intend to delve deeper into the discovery to then use these cyborg cells for future practical applications and expand the range of ways in which they can be useful.
