Global warming is a concern for many scientists. There is a possibility that some cities and countries will later face the consequences of melting glaciers. This is especially true for small island states.
So, which countries are already starting to see their lands decrease?
Republic of Maldives
This state consists of several islands, 80% of which do not rise more than one meter above sea level. The highest point of Maldives is 2.4 m above sea level. Scientists predict that by 2100 the high water could rise by 1.1m, so it is likely that the Maldives will be almost completely below it.
Islands are hard to fight with the elements. The state has no resources. But the country is actively struggling with global warming. And although the results in this regard are not so good, the natives are gradually moving to higher altitudes or heading to the mainland.
Nauru
This small state has an area of only 21 km. At the same time, most of its soils are unsuitable for life due to the destruction associated with the extraction of minerals. The locals have to live far from the coast, but the coast of the island is getting smaller every year. That’s why the people of Nauru have to leave their country.
Kiribati
In recent years, this country is frequently visited by floods. It is also accustomed to all kinds of natural disasters. Ocean water erodes Kiribati’s coast, replenishing freshwater supplies. During high tide, people on the islands may only stay home for a while as they are on high pillars. But even these tricks don’t help much.
The locals are trying to fight the elements: to strengthen the shores and build fences, but all in vain. Sandbags set up to hold the water are simply taken to the ocean. Trees are also planted for this purpose, but these are only temporary measures.
Due to the difficult situation, the authorities have had to buy land in Fiji, but they will not be able to resettle all residents in the new area. Therefore, it will be necessary to agree with other countries to accept part of the population.
Tuvalu
This small state is located in the Pacific Ocean. It is already losing a lot of land on its islands. It originally consisted of 9 islands, but since 2000 the country has lost 4 of them.
The highest point of Tuvalu – 5 m above sea level. It can reach water quite quickly. In an emergency, local residents will relocate to Australia, New Zealand or Fiji.
