The research was conducted at Vattenfall’s 11-turbine offshore wind farm in Aberdeen, also known as the European Offshore Wind Distribution Centre. For this, Vattenfall combined radar data with cameras to identify seabird species and create a 3D image of flight patterns and how birds avoid the rotor blades of offshore wind turbines.
What the researchers discovered
Movement silver swallows, gannets, three-toed swallows, and great black-backed swallows It was studied in detail from April to October, when bird activity peaks. This study only looked at four species, but Vattenfall says the model could be applied to more species. Additionally, the findings apply not only to offshore wind farms, but also to those located on land.
The result is at six-month observations. No collision of birds with propeller blade was recorded. They were kept at a distance of 90-160 meters from the blades.
Now scientists want to consider more varieties.
Studying bird behavior near wind turbines is part of an overall effort to prevent the construction of wind farms on bird flight paths.
