Melting Arctic “permafrost” has revealed several missing pathogens, and one of them stands out: a 48,500-year-old zombie stuck in ice sheets. According to information disclosed by scientists from Europe, all of them can pose a great danger to humanity and all life on planet Earth. However, no data has been released and they are looking into how they work so we don’t have any nasty surprises in the future.

An analysis of its age was made based on radiocarbon dating of the soil, and several other specimens were found in the area they surveyed. The youngest was found in the remains of a woolly mammoth, which is 27,000 years old. The man responsible for the discoveries, Jean-Michel Claverie, says this could be a major public health threat we could face from now on.

On CNN, Claverie warned that we may be worried that climate change will bring back this kind of existence. “We see this virus, even infecting amoebas, as a replacement for all the others stuck in the permafrost. We see traces of many others. According to Birgitta Evengaard, professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Umeå (Sweden), we should pay more attention to what is thawed before a tragedy occurs. “If there’s a virus hidden in the permafrost that we haven’t come into contact with for thousands of years, our current immune defenses may not be enough to contain it. In recent decades, ice melting four times faster than usual has been closely studied in the area, and global warming is considered the main cause of the problem.
