This image, taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter vehicle, is near the south pole of the moon. Malapert crater shows. Malapert is known as one of the largest and oldest impact craters on the lunar surface. The crater is thought to have formed 4 billion years ago.

So why this crater and not another place?

What sets the Malapert crater apart from the rest of the lunar surface lies in its geological features. in the region steep slopes, high peaks and rocky ground consists.

Why are these regions all located at the south pole of the moon?

Many factors play into NASA’s focus on the south of the moon. The most prominent of these factors is that this region has not been discovered before. Astronauts will land the region is always in the shade and the craters are thought to have ice due to the lack of sunlight.
