Dangerous solar storm hit the Earth because of the “hole” in the sun

One storm solar classified as class G4 (heavy), struck Earth between Thursday and Friday 23rd and 24th after a “hole” opened in the star’s corona, causing auroras even in less likely locations and a phenomenon known as STEVE (English title A strong increase in the rate of thermal radiation). Not only that, it also affected radio broadcasts.

The event itself was already predicted, what was not expected was its intensity – the highest in six years. These holes in a star occur in regions where its magnetic fields open up, allowing the solar wind to escape. It is considered relatively dangerous due to the high energy levels and interference generated by our planet’s electronic systems.

The source of powerful radiation is still unknown, since the unmanned probe SOHOfrom NASA, responsible for the study of the Sun, has not sent new images in recent days. One suspect is that it came from active locations currently on the other side of the star.

Solar storm opens crack in Earth’s magnetosphere

The solar storm opened a crack in Earth’s magnetosphere, a region formed by the interaction between the planet’s magnetic field and the solar wind, for almost 24 hours. This resulted in him reaching the G4 category, considered serious in the current classification and requiring attention.

This event was preceded by the autumn equinox, which led to bright auroras and the appearance of mysterious STEWS, a phenomenon that occurs during the northern lights, when purple light “cuts” the sky.

While the event was impressive and breathtakingly beautiful, experts regularly warn that severe solar storms could have serious consequences for the Earth, affecting navigation and communications systems, as well as electrical grids. Therefore, scientists are exploring ways to accurately predict these events and mitigate their effects.
