The Lyrid meteor shower is a phenomenon that occurs every year in the month of April. The reason is that the planet Earth passes through the dusty trail of Comet Thatcher, which visits us every 415 years and leaves behind small celestial bodies that eventually enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, burning and causing a luminous effect. A meteor shower occurs when several meteors pass through the night sky.

This pass runs from April 15th and will last until April 29th. But tonight, as already said, is the best time to visualize.

According to astronomer Marcelo de Cicco, coordinator of the Brazilian meteor research project EXOSS, this phenomenon allows us to “estimate the amount and period of greater penetration of debris and remnants coming from meteoroid showers that our planet periodically crosses”, in addition to helping the study of our solar system.

How to watch the Lyrid meteor shower

Meteor showers can be seen throughout Brazil. while the northern and northeastern regions are privileged. The best time to open windows from 01:00 am, Brazilian time. However, it is important to note that the moon’s light of 67% can interfere with the visibility of less bright meteors.

To see the meteor shower at its best, you need to be in location with low light pollutionthat is, without many billboards, lampposts, etc., hoping for a sky without many clouds and look north. After that, just be patient.

To find north, in turn, “point your right hand to the place where the sun rises (east), and your left hand to the place where the sun sets (west), so that it will be facing north.”

It’s also interesting to note that some independent YouTube channels are live streaming the meteor shower. So if you can’t watch it wherever you are, there are other options, who knows, to see celestial bodies.
