Scientist will be underwater for 100 days for the sake of experiment

Dituri conducts research on the effects of hyperbaric pressure on the human body when the air pressure is higher than sea level. He hopes to use his time below the surface to study how living in this high-pressure environment affects his health. If all goes well, it will set the record for the longest stay under the ocean’s surface.

Dituri’s efforts will be very different from life on a submarine. Submarines are sealed when submerged and maintain the same pressure as at sea level (i.e. at the surface). This means that even if the submarine is hundreds of meters deep, there is no significant difference in pressure.

But Dituri’s underwater habitat won’t have rigid hatches or airlocks between the ocean and its dry habitat, like a submarine. Imagine a glass of water being turned upside down and pushed into a sink full of water. Dituri’s habitat will again have an air pocket at the top, and on the floor of one of the rooms there will be a pool of water from the ocean outside.

Few have studied the long-term effects of hyperbaric pressure on the body. However, it can pose a very real threat to a person. Over generations of evolution, our bodies have adapted to sea level conditions where the two main gases involved in respiration (oxygen and carbon dioxide) are the only gases that freely pass through the path between the lungs and blood. However, as the pressure increases, the nitrogen in the air is forced out through the thin walls of our lungs and enters the blood. This can cause a number of consequences whose causes are currently unknown.
