What makes you think at first glance “It shouldn’t be possible”, but as you wonder, “I wonder!” an idea to say.

We also publish we asked an expert and engineer Fatih İnal explained to us whether this idea is really possible or not, in a language that everyone can understand.

If we put a conveyor belt (conveyor / treadmill) under a passenger plane and give the engines full throttle, can we make this plane take off?

plane question

To understand the answer to this We need to discuss some basic concepts.

There are 4 fundamental forces acting on an aircraft: weight, thrust, drag, weight.

aeroplane

  • Weight: It is the force created by the Earth’s gravity, which is always perpendicular to the ground and pulls the plane down.
  • Punch: It is the thrust that the aircraft gets by accelerating and transferring the air it receives from the front thanks to the engines to the rear. As engine power increases, so does this power.
  • dragging: It is the wind resistance experienced by the aircraft during its movement. As the aircraft accelerates, drag increases. As the aircraft accelerates, the speed of the air passing by its wings will increase. To better understand this situation, imagine that the plane is stationary on the ground and the wind on the plane is getting faster and faster. We can give an example of the aircraft hovering in the air when the ground speed is 0 (Ground speed: the speed of the projection of each aircraft on the ground during flight).
  • Lifting: The source of lift is the speed and direction of the airflow around the wings of the aircraft. Therefore, the wind speed and direction to which the aircraft is exposed is very important for takeoff and landing. Because they have direct effects on buoyancy.

In other words, we can summarize the take-off of an aircraft at the beginning of a runway as follows:

  • Due to its weight, the aircraft always points to the ground. is pulled by gravity.
  • With the engines on, the plane accelerates the air in front and transfers it to the rear and it starts speeding forward.
  • The thrust produced by the engines, The drag force is not a problem at this stage as it is much higher than the drag force that will occur due to air resistance.
  • As the aircraft accelerates, the amount of air flowing past the wings per unit time also increases. This situation Increases lifting force.
  • The lifting force increases once he starts to bear the weight the plane’s wheels are cut off the ground and the plane begins to take off.

Now that we’ve roughly learned the basics, we can more easily understand if the plane can take off with the idea here.

plane question

The aircraft will try to accelerate while generating thrust, but because the ground moves in the opposite direction at the same speed as the wheels will never progress.

All the power it will produce, the ground below in the opposite direction will result in acceleration. Because the plane can’t accelerate, an airplane whose wings go around it airflow will not occur. A lifting force that can be greater than the weight is therefore not possible in this case.

in the same scenario If we consider that we increase too much the wind speed coming from the plane, The wings can produce the necessary lift for take-off, but it should not be forgotten that the drag force in this case increases significantly.

In this case, whether the aircraft maintains its stability or not. aircraft should be examined. Even if we could make this possible, it wouldn’t make much sense because it would be an unnecessary effort.
