It’s no secret that carbon dioxide has a detrimental effect on our ecology. It accumulates in the air for many years, trapping heat in the atmosphere and warming the planet, leading to gradual changes in the ecosystem. However, Earth has some natural mechanisms for dealing with excess CO.₂. One of them wants to strengthen a new initiative.

How does it work

We know that the oceans can absorb carbon dioxide and trap it in huge volumes of liquid. In fact, water has already absorbed a significant amount of greenhouse gases emitted by humankind in recent decades. However, this process has a limit. Additionally, the rapid warming of the ocean suppresses this ability – as a result, water can absorb less CO.₂.

Scientists have found a way to master this process and increase its benefits. The idea is that filtering water from carbon dioxide allows the oceans to absorb more of it.

• For this purpose, water is pumped into the DOC plant.
• Then about half of this water is subjected to electrodialysis. Essentially, water is electrically charged to turn the molecules into acid.
• When the acid is added back to another part of the seawater, it reacts with the carbon to release CO.₂. Captura can capture this gas to store or sell.
• Acidic water is harmful to marine life, so alkali is added before it is released back into the ocean.

Some conservation organizations are already wary of this technology. Captura plans to filter the water so that marine animals do not enter the facility. There are also concerns about: increase in industrial activities and noise pollution in marine ecosystems that are already under stress.
