The discovery was made while investigating an area near the Croatian island of Korčula, where archaeologists had previously discovered a submerged Neolithic site. This time the researchers found a paved road leading from the village to the island in ancient times. Radiocarbon analysis of the wood found at the site showed that the settlement existed in the Neolithic period, around 4900 BC.

Scientists discovered the sunken settlement a few years ago while examining satellite images of the area near the east coast of the island of Korčula. Underwater archaeologists explored the area and discovered a Stone Age settlement that they tentatively dated to around 4500 BC. On a small piece of land, they found the remains of the stone walls surrounding the settlement, flint tools and other items used by the local people. According to scientists, the monument belongs to the Hvar archaeological culture.
