Commercial operation of the first domestically designed and manufactured C919 mainline jet passenger aircraft began in China. Astar successfully performed its maiden flight from Shanghai to Beijing with 128 passengers on board.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to Xinhua.

“The commercial operation of the C919 marks the first time that the Chinese civil aviation market has a locally developed mainline jet,” said Wei Yingbiao, vice president of aircraft developer at China Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC). He was greeted with a water salute at Beijing Capital International Airport. .

The C919 is a unibody aircraft with eight business class seats and 156 economy class seats, and features enhanced cabin features such as a 2.25-metre roof and retractable overhead boxes. The average economy class seat is 1.5 cm wider than neighboring seats.

The C919, flying on Sunday, will serve China Eastern Airlines’ flights on the Shanghai – Chengdu route from Shanghai, where the manufacturing plant for these planes is located. The company plans to gradually increase the number of routes the C919 will fly with the arrival of new ships.

China Eastern and COMAC have signed a contract for the purchase of five C919s to be stationed at Shanghai Airport. The second plane is expected to arrive in mid-June.

To date, COMAC has received 1,061 aircraft orders from various customers.

As the company states, China has a huge civil aviation market with huge potential. According to COMAC forecasts, in the period 2022-2041, the Chinese civil aviation market will receive 9,284 new aircraft, including 6,288 single-body aircraft, making it the world’s largest single-country civil aviation market.

As reported, the C919 project, an aircraft with 156 to 190 seats, was launched in 2007. In total, approximately 300,000 people participated in the design, production and flight tests.

In November 2015, the first C919 rolled off the assembly line in Shanghai and made its first successful flight in 2017.

In the following years, the ship underwent flight tests in various locations and environments to fully test its safety, reliability and performance.

In September 2022, the C919 received a certificate of conformity from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and in December of the same year, the world’s first C919 joined the China Eastern Airlines fleet.

Experts suggest that the Chinese airliner could become a serious competitor for Airbus and Boeing in the large passenger aircraft market.
