Twitter’s senior executive for security and content management left the company shortly after owner Elon Musk complained about the platform’s handling of transgender-themed posts. The departure marks a new wave of uprising among key executives at Twitter since Musk took over last year.
Ella Irwin, Twitter’s head of trust and safety, confirmed her resignation in two tweets on Friday. He didn’t say why in a statement, but his departure came shortly after Musk criticized Twitter for tweets about a conservative media company’s documentary questioning transgender medical treatment for children and teens.
Musk responded to complaints from Jeremy Boring, CEO of the Daily Wire media company. In tweets and retweets by conservative commentators on Thursday, Boring said Twitter was suppressing the movie by marking posts about the movie as hate speech and removing the movie from trending lists.
Boreing tweeted that Twitter’s “What is a Woman?” He wrote that he canceled the premiere deal. “for free on the platform due to two instances of ‘wrong gender’. Twitter’s rules prohibit deliberately misleading transgender people based on their gender or name.
“This was a mistake made by many on Twitter. That is absolutely permissible,” Musk wrote. “Whether you agree or disagree with someone’s use of their preferred pronoun, not doing so is rude at best and certainly does not break any law.”
On Friday, Irwin tweeted that “one or two people noticed” that he had left the company the previous day, citing speculation as to whether he was fired. He said he would tweet 24 to announcing his departure. Then he wrote that he was just joking about the long story.
“I seriously resigned but it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am so grateful to be working with this amazing team of passionate, creative and hard-working people. Will cheer for you all and on Twitter as you go!
Irwin, along with Musk, has been the most important voice of the company’s content policy, which has been constantly evolving in recent months.
Since buying Twitter for $44 billion in October, Twitter has struggled to win back advertisers who have been turned down by Musk’s sweeping changes and relaxation of hate speech rules. Twitter also has a new CEO named Linda Jaccarino, known for her decades of experience in the media and advertising industry, but she hasn’t started yet.
Irwin and Twitter did not respond to requests for comment from the Associated Press.
Twitter has been in turmoil, including mass layoffs and layoffs, since Tesla’s billionaire owner bought the San Francisco-based company and made it private. The company’s head of trust and security left shortly after the takeover, and the highest turnover continued. Last month, Twitter fired two more top executives.
