Samsung is one of the companies that provides the best and most comprehensive support for its phones. Besides the good Android update policy, they have a real galaxy of apps, some of which are very interesting. And the South Korean company has a habit of updating these apps to improve their functions and performance.

One of the latest moves is an update to the companion camera app Camera Assistant, which has reached version 2.0 with improvements for high-resolution photos. Of course, it does not reach every model. Then we tell you What is this new Samsung camera update and how can you install it?.

How to improve Samsung Galaxy camera

Admittedly, Samsung doesn’t make it easy. they’re accessing some of the improvements they’ve launched for phone cameras. The camera app has the typical configuration settings, but there is also a companion app called Camera Assistant.

It is not installed by default on our mobile nor can it be accessed from the camera settings first: you have to download it from the Galaxy Store. This means the user needs to go to the Galaxy Store, search for the ‘Camera Assistant’ app and download it.

This is not just another camera app, but a set of settings that we can apply and that are executed automatically in the camera app. Once installed, we can also access these improvements from the camera configuration section.

And no, these are not minor improvements. For example, a few months ago, Samsung added 2x digital lossless telephoto to the Galaxy S23 through this application. If you have not installed it, you cannot access this interesting innovation. And if you are interested (we recommend it), you can download it from this link.

Camera Assistant was focused on the premium range, but a few weeks ago Samsung announced that it would reach the mid-range Samsung Galaxy as well, and now we have news again.

This month, the app has been updated twice: the first to add improvements to the Galaxy S24, and the other to add improvements for other phones. These are interesting developments because one of them is It directly affects digital zoom when we take high resolution photos. We leave these to you below:

  • Distortion correction– Automatically corrects slanted or bent lines caused by lens and perspective distortion.
  • Expand digital zoom– Enlarges photos to the selected resolution if the resolution decreases due to zooming.
Samsung Galaxy Camera Improvements

The explanation for the first option is pretty straightforward, but the truth is that digital zoom is a bit messy. This is a setting found in the ‘High resolution settings’ section and works when we select the full resolution of the sensor in the camera and zoom in.

So, Yes, we have the Galaxy S23 with a 50-megapixel sensor and we choose this resolution for the photo, obviously it will take a photo at 50 megapixels. However, if we digitally zoom in that mode, the resolution of the resulting file will be 12 megapixels. If we activate the new Camera Assistant option, the resulting file in the same case will be expanded to 50 megapixels.

According to the tests I was able to do, quality is maintained between both files, but obviously if we enable the option we will have a much larger image. This can be useful if we take a photo at 50 megapixel resolution and apply 2x zoombecause instead of a 12 megapixel file we will still have a 50 megapixel file.

Improved Samsung Galaxy High Definition Camera

Which phones does this update work on? There are two requirements here: Having at least UI 5.1 and one of the following models:

  • Galaxy S23 Family
  • Galaxy S22 Family
  • Galaxy S21 Family
  • Galaxy S20 Family
  • Galaxy Note 20 Family
  • Galaxy Z Fold5
  • Galaxy Z Flip5
  • Galaxy Z Fold4
  • Galaxy Z Flip4
  • Galaxy Z Fold3
  • Galaxy Z Flip3
  • Galaxy Z Fold 2
  • Galaxy Z Flip

Also on mobile phones with One UI 6 or above those mentioned above and what we will leave below:

  • Galaxy S24 Family
  • Galaxy A73
  • Galaxy A72
  • Galaxy A54
  • Galaxy A53
  • Galaxy A52S
  • Galaxy A52
  • Galaxy M54
  • Galaxy F54

Obviously, if the mobile phone does not have a sensor larger than 12 megapixels, this high-resolution zoom improvement will not be compatible, but most of the features in the Camera Assistant will be supported.
