Italy’s civil protection department has raised the alert level to maximum due to a new volcanic eruption Stromboliwhich is located on the island of the same name in the south of Italy.
“The approval of the alert level is based on phenomenological reports and hazard assessments provided by competence centres,” the agency said in a statement on its website.
The level of anxiety that went from from orange to redactivating the operational phase preliminary alarmallows the activation of the local civil protection level in the advanced operations centre, which will be supported by experts from the national office to ensure cooperation with the operational structures involved.
Local authorities asked the island’s population to stay informed and “scrupulously” follow civil protection instructions, “regardless” of volcanic phenomena, which “may have frequent variations”, but “the situation of imbalance persists”.
Mount Stromboli is about 920 meters high and erupts frequently. The island has a population of about 500 people and is a tourist destination for those who come from mainland Italy or Sicily to climb the volcano.
