Amazon Web Services’ cloud computing platform has helped Ukrainian ministries and private companies transfer more than 10 petabytes of data to secure servers following the massive invasion of Russia.

According to Ukrinform, this is indicated on the company’s blog.

“AWS has added more than 10 petabytes (10 million gigabytes) of key data from 27 Ukrainian ministries, 18 Ukrainian universities, the largest K-12 distance learning school (training hundreds of thousands of IDPs) and a dozen other private sector companies. . There are currently 61 passes (in Ukrainian – ed.) of government data on AWS, and even more are expected,” he said.

It is stated that prior to the Russian invasion, Ukrainian law required certain government and private sector data to be stored on servers physically located in Ukraine.

However, a week before the Russian army invaded the country, the Ukrainian parliament passed a law allowing data from the government and private sector to be moved to the cloud. To this end, the Ukrainian leadership made a public appeal for help. Amazon Web Services (AWS) was one of the first platforms to respond.

Three days after the Russian offensive began, AWS experts began to transfer this data to AWS Snowball, a special device for computing, transferring and storing data.

“AWS is honored to work with the Ukrainian government and other private and non-governmental organizations to support the Ukrainian people. We will continue to help with our efforts and share our technical knowledge and services with those who need it.”

As Ukrinform reported, in early March, Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov said that Amazon Web Services refuses to accept new customers from Russia.
