20% of TIM data traffic at Rock in Rio used 5G.

Rock in Rio 2022 was a great success across several dimensions, including technology. According to a survey by TIM, the official sponsor of the festival, customers used 133 terabytes of data via mobile networks, 20% of the total via 5G, which also debuted at the music festival.

The amount refers to seven days of rock in Rio and is enough to watch YouTube videos for 45 years and seven months without stopping. Also, according to TIM, almost 30% of the total data was used to upload photos and videos. The operator adds that the use of messaging, video calls and real-time broadcasts has also been heavy.

TIM explained that initial expectations for 5G network usage were only 10%. It is worth recalling that the company installed 35 antennas in Cidade do Roc, 25 of them with the fifth generation band. TIM also stated that its average speed is 400 Mbps and goes up to 1.5 gigabytes per second.

Members of the Mundo Conectado team attended Rock in Rio 2022 and had access to the 5G signal of other operators. Claro and Vivo stayed on 4G most of the time, while Oi went off the air at times.

TIM also did a daily traffic analysis and showed that the highest number of visitors was on September 4th, when pop star Justin Bieber was the headliner. The show broke the operator’s network usage record, followed by performances by Dua Lipa and Yvete Sangalo technically associated with Coldplay and Guns N’Roses.
