The Alien is one of those film sagas that has been heavily represented in the gaming world for decades. Ever since Concept Software’s Alien, released in 1984 for the Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and Commodore 64, we’ve been treated to new titles from time to time that have tried, with varying degrees of success, to bring the horrifying experience of confronting a terrifying xenomorph from the big screen to the privacy of our homes.
Lt. Ripley, Dallas, the ship Nostromo… we’re talking about a major legacy in science fiction, but also in horror. And I bet most of us still remember the first time we saw any of the films in the saga and the impact the first sighting of the creature had on us. The rest of the plots also prepared many surprises for us, but without a doubt, the “bugs” who give the saga its name deserve it by themselves.
So whenever a new game based on the Alien universe is announced, we cross our fingers and hope that it can, to a greater or lesser extent, give us an experience that can rival in intensity what the movies have produced for us.. In other words, every announcement of a new Alien game is potentially good news that is, yes, on more than one occasion sadly undercut by the bottom line.
Now, in this case, we still cannot talk about an announcement, but about a leak. As we can read in Insider Gaming, Japanese studio Grasshopper Manufacture is working on a new triple A from the Alien universe. The said publication claims to have had access to internal documentation from the study which confirms this development, and which suggests that the company’s plans will go public sometime in 2023, probably around Christmas.
Not much else is known about this game, other than the fact that it will be a survival horror title in the vein of Resident Evil, Dead Space and similar titles. Recall that Grasshopper acquired NetEase in October last year, at the end of an operation that began a few months earlier, in May. This served to further strengthen its already remarkable history, which includes such notable sagas as No More Heroes, The Silver Case and Killer7. This is, yes, his first project related to the Alien saga, so we’ll be keeping a close eye out for any official announcements, progress, etc., so we can start judging whether we should get excited again.
