The Pentagon could save $40 billion by refusing to replace the F135 engine of its fifth-generation F-35A fighter jets. Air & Space Force magazine writes that Pratt & Whitney is offering to upgrade existing power units.
“We believe basic modernization will save $40 billion”, – Pratt & Whitney Vice President Jen Latka said during a briefing.
The company has offered to upgrade the F135 engine as part of its Engine Core Upgrade (ECU) package. According to a Pratt & Whitney vice president, the ECU will cost $2.4 billion to develop, compared to $6.7 billion to develop a new engine under the Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP).
General Electric developed the XA100 three-circuit adaptive cycle engine to replace the F135, and Pratt & Whitney presented the XA101 engine. It is thought that the new power units can increase the flight range of the F-35 by 25-30 percent.
