Ecco quanto incide l’Always-on Display sull’autonomia dello smartphone

The Always-on Display feature has been on Android smartphones for a long time, but this year it only appears on Apple devices. In a recent update, the company ended and resolved criticism of this modality. Then the DxOMark lab decided to check how the constant display of information on the screen affects battery life on both Android and iPhone.

How does Quanto l’Always-on Display affect smartphone autonomy? Face devices that make Android and Apple devices stand out

Experimentally, we used four smartphones: Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max, Google Pixel 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos versions) and Xiaomi 12S Ultra. All devices were tested for at least two days in the same conditions at a constant temperature of approximately 22°C, 50 lux ambient light and between 20% and 80% battery charge. This range is the ricordiamo, and a level of car that can be visually displayed in the most accurate way possible. The same settings are made on all devices. Therefore, antenna mode and adaptive screen update frequency are enabled, and auto brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and mobile transmission are disabled.

test autonomy android always on screen

Tests by DxOMark experts show that activating the Always-on Display function causes the charging of the smartphone to accelerate by about 4 volts. For example, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra without AoD worked for 495 hours in the above conditions and only 103 hours after activation. In the case of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the autonomy has been reduced from 466 hours to 122 hours. It is interesting to note that the Pixel 7 Pro without AoD has the worst battery life, but lasts longer than others when this function is enabled.

Learn to control battery consumption in milliamps (mA) to take advantage of the active display. When accessing AoD, it was discovered that the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Pixel 7 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra consumed around 36 mAh, while the Xiaomi 12S Ultra consumed more than 47 mAh. In addition, the screens of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Xiaomi 12S Ultra are ten times brighter than the other two devices in Always-on Display mode. At the same time, it is interesting that the iPhone 14 Pro Max shows low energy consumption at maximum brightness, which indicates that Apple has done a good job optimizing this function.

It is interesting to note that according to a survey conducted by DxOMark, 54% of users find the Always-on Display function useful, while the remaining 46% are not so sure about the need for this option.
