The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the US Air Force successfully conducted the final tests of the Hypersonic Airborne Weapons Concept (HAWC) missile. During the test flight, the HAWC missile flew at a speed of over Mach 5, at an altitude of more than 18 km and at a distance of more than 556 km.

The latest flight showed improved capabilities and performance. Currently, the country’s hypersonic missile portfolio includes two possible designs of the Lockheed Martin and Raytheon hypersonic jet-powered missiles.

“The HAWC program has created a new generation of hypersonic engineers and scientists. HAWC has also brought rich data and advancements to the hypersonic community. Industry teams have taken development seriously and we have the guts and luck to run it.”said Andrew Nodler, HAWC program manager.

DARPA will now use the data collected during these tests in a new program. Although the HAWC program has completed the final phase of the program, there is still more opportunity to develop data and technology to analyze.

DARPA plans to continue this development in the HAWC with More Capability (MOHAWC) program, building and releasing more vehicles based on HAWC achievements. These rockets will expand operational range and provide technology for future programs.
