[Opinión] The Spanish government is finalizing a new decree that will further increase the rates applied to electronic devices sold in Spain by Digital Canon. And make no doubt about it; how it happened so far the price increase will be paid directly by the citizens.
Target He points to sector sources to reveal that a new increase in the digital canon will be approved by decree this month once the “last fringes” are settled. Nonsense will be looming especially for smart phones, the price of which is for a fee will increase by 200%. In addition, all storage solutions will increase their fee, and dozens of new devices will be included in the list, which will expand from the current 40 products to – no less than – 104.
The case of wearable devices such as smart watches, which will now be taxed, serves to illustrate the point. If someone can explain what kind of “private copy” can be stored in a quantization bracelet, they have invented gunpowder. It is clear that the desire is only to collect money, only author entities benefit from this and hurt everyone elsemanufacturers, distribution channels and retailers and of course consumers who are fed up with paying for the “party” of a few freeloaders.
Digital canon is a robbery
“Unfair”, “outdated” and “discriminatory”. The same qualifications that served us for the original digital canon were valid for the following as well as the new one. Moreover, technological developments and market conditions alone make it even more unjustifiable.
alleged “reimbursement for making private copies” books, music, movies or series that are claimed to support the canon and its toll is not sustainable in a technological world that has completely changed the distribution of digital content with streaming services at the forefront. Who Makes Private Copies Today?
Very, very little. According to a report published in 2017 (the penultimate version of the Digital Canon) by an association representing the technology industry in Europe, the number of users who made private copies of works protected by intellectual property rights was irrelevant and confirmed that the industry, channel and consumers we paid an overcompensation rights holders. Six years later, everyone will understand that the production of these copies has decreased even more, and it is enough to see the decrease in the rate of piracy and traffic on direct download sites or P2P networks.
and what to say is billed in advance fee provided that the user will perform some activity that could harm the copyright holder… Who and how can know that you will use the memory card to pirate copyrighted content.
Of course, you need to protect the creation, but as the representatives of the manufacturers say: “Rights holders receive compensation much higher than the damage actually caused”. As already said, a discriminatory and unfair tax that is not at all justified at the moment.

The new digital canon: rates
Although the digital canon legislation said that the tax should fall on manufacturers and distributors, no one doubted that it would eventually be reflected in the final sale price. And so it happened in all cases. End consumers have paid and will continue to pay this revolutionary tax benefiting only the governing bodies, AIE, AISGE, CEDRO, AMA or EGEDA, repeatedly condemned for monopolistic practices and abusive rates.
The list of affected products will increase from 40 to 104, and the vast majority will increase, which will subsequently cause increasing the price of the technology at a time when the products had already gone up and a lot. The list is priceless. We leave you with the summary:
- Smartphones regardless of their price: €3.25

The reader suffered for allegedly being a content pirate, while the real pirates stepped on the carpet of government and rights protection associations. Or you can break into the sack once you pay for it up front… They say it’s fair.
