Subreddit Users Google Pixel reported that when viewing a clip from the classic 1979 film Alien on a device Pixel 6, 6A or pixel 7, the phone can reboot instantly. The problem seems to be related to the video as the device freezes before even loading one frame. The main theory discussed by users is that 4K HDR video format can be the cause of the problem.

Some users also claim that the cellular service may not work properly after a reset and a second reset is required to resolve the issue.

According to comments, all devices affected by the issue reported on the Google Pixel subreddit use Tensor SoC, an Exynos processor developed by Google itself. As such, it is unlikely that other non-Google devices will be affected by the same issue. While Samsung smartphones using Exynos might be the next most likely candidates, there have been no reports of similar cases on these devices so far.

Solution in progress

This bug was first reported over the weekend, but it looks like work is underway to fix it. According to ARStechnica, the issue was tested on a Pixel 7 Pro device last Monday (27) and resulted in immediate crashes. However, the following Tuesday (28) the same portal managed to play the clip perfectly, suggesting that Google made some changes to solve the problem.

Google has a number of tools that allow you to change how devices work remotely, including the ability to enable or disable code paths without having to release an official update.

Similar incidents have happened before with Android devices. An example happened in 2020 when a “cursed” wallpaper was identified as the cause of device crashes due to a color space error.
