Apple is reportedly working on a new mixed reality headset that is expected to be announced later this year. The open source code provided by the company itself mentions the new operating system. Apple has updated the source code available to developers on GitHub. It mentions realityOS and Reality Simulator alongside existing platforms like iOS, macOS, and watchOS. 9to5Mac has checked and confirmed that RealityOS, Reality Simulator and Wolf (the platform’s codename) are mentioned in Apple’s open source code.
Reality OS It is the potential name of the operating system that will run Apple’s mixed reality headset. His name was previously mentioned in the diaries of the App Store, another Apple tool for developers. In 2021, the company also registered the realityOS trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Bloomberg previously reported that Apple has decided on the name xrOS, which refers to “augmented reality”. Apple also has registered trademarks such as Reality One, Reality Pro, and Reality Processor.
The first version of the headset is expected to be unveiled at WWDC in June, and the device will go on sale later this year. It will be equipped with two high-resolution micro-OLED displays, as well as dozens of built-in cameras and sensors for hand and eye tracking. The system will be built on the basis of the Apple M2. Due to its superior hardware, the headset is expected to cost around US$3,000. A $1,500 version will be released in the future.
