An artwork created by artificial intelligence (AI) is sparking conversations about the relationship between technology and art after being selected as a winner in the competition’s open category. Sony World Photography Awards from World Photography Organization.

Artist Boris Eldagsen, who calls himself a “photomedia artist” on his website, collaborated with AI to create a work called “Electrician(Electrician), which depicts two women in a grainy sepia tone streaked with light, reminiscent of early 20th century “spiritual photography”.

Eldagsen, who has been studying the creative possibilities of AI scanners since 2000, explained on his website that his job isn’t just about “pressing a button and that’s it.” For him, working with AI is a “co-creation”, in which he acts as a process leader. The work selected by the jury is the result of a complex interplay of operational engineering, coloring and repainting, using the photographic knowledge acquired by the artist over a career spanning more than 20 years.

According to the Peta Pixel website, the World Photography Organization announced the winners on March 14 and Eldagsen was one of the finalists. A month later, on April 13, Eldagsen announced on his website that he would not accept the award. According to him, entering the competition was a way to check “if competitions are ready for AI-generated images. No”.

Despite the rejection of the award, Eldagsen’s work has drawn attention to the possibilities of AI in artistic creation and the need to rethink evaluation criteria in photography and other art forms. The Electrician is proof that technology can open new doors for human creativity and that the future of art may be even more amazing than we imagine.

this is not the first time

Eldagsen was not the first artist to win the competition with an AI-generated artwork. Last August, Jason Allen won the fine arts competition at the Colorado State Fair with his Theåtre D’opéra Spatial, also created in collaboration with artificial intelligence. Unlike Eldagsen, Allen received awards for his work.

As artificial intelligence technology continues to advance, artificial intelligence-generated artworks are becoming more and more common. Generators like Runway’s Gen-2 and OpenAI’s famous DALL-E 2 show how easy it is for a computer to create images and videos from text. However, the use of these generators often results in works containing material (often copyrighted) from other sources, raising questions about the originality of AI-generated art.
